Brief
Over one hundred years old, the three-storey town house contained many features such as the original flooring, fireplaces, doors and architraves. We explored different plan options and different levels of alterations so that the client could assess the ‘cost vs value for money’ ratio.
Concept
Minimal adjustments for maximum impact. All options required the reconfiguration of the staircases as they were non-compliant with current building regulations and awkward, to the point of dangerous, to use. Lining up the staircases over each other also made room for a new downstairs WC. Light was maximised by removing part of the extension, creating an open-plan utility area on the first floor and special hand-rail designs for the staircases. All existing features were carefully retained. Their beautifully aged patinas now add to the character of the house.
